During World War I, three friends serving in the Italian Air Corps planted the seeds that would eventually grow into a completely new motorcycle company.

A tragic event prevented Carlo Guzzi, Giorgio Parodi, and Giovanni Ravelli from applying their technical expertise to bikes before they could get started. Ravelli perished in an aircraft crash just a few days after the war came to an end.

The GP, their first motorcycle, was named after the initials of the two founders who started the company.

The Moto Guzzi* rider Gino Finzi won the prestigious Targa Florio race for the company only a few weeks after coming last for the brand in the Milan-Naples race.

The ability of the Guzzi nameplate to win such important racing awards in its first year signaled the beginning of a magical period of competitive achievement for the company.

Moto Guzzi’s* renowned designer, Giulio Cesara Carcano, created a ground-breaking racing vehicle, the Guzzi Otto Cilindri, in 1955.

It was the first eight-cylinder machine to compete in Grand Prix racing. It was capable of reaching speeds of more than 175 miles per hour.

Guzzi, however, was forced to withdraw from racing at the end of 1957 due to economic considerations, before the V8’s full potential could be realized.
